  • The maximum quota for immigrants willing to come to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador have a reason to be happy as the province has increased application intake by 25 per cent this year as compared to the first 10 months of 2017. This has been declared by the province’s government.

In the previous year, this eastern most Atlantic province of Canada welcomes 832 candidates through both its Provincial Nominee Program (Known as NLPNP) and the federal linked Atlantic Immigration Pilot Project.

The Minister of Advanced Education, Skills and Labour, Province of Newfoundland & Labrador Al Hawkins, endorsed about 25 per cent boost in applications for immigrants this year to the province’s multi-year immigration action plan, which has been recently announced with an aims to increase the number of newcomers to Canada including Newfoundland and Labrador to 1,700 annually by the end of year 2022. In order to make sure that such immigrants after immigrating to the province want to stay and build their futures in Newfoundland and Labrador rather than moving for some other province, a third Minister’s Round table on Immigration, hosted by Hawkins has been called for.

Canada’s Multi-year Immigration Plans has been launched earlier this year. A first-ever initiative of its kind, it brings together government, business, labour, municipal governments, community organizations and service providers to sketch out a reliable plan to invite skilled workers in each part of the country.  For Newfoundland’s immigration action plan, the central focus of the round tables is to develop new pathways to attract and retain skilled immigrants and their families in Newfoundland & Labrador.

On October 25th, Hawkins gave out a statement to the legislature of the province stating that “The input we received will inform our planning as we identify priority actions to help retain newcomers, strengthen our communities and grow the economy.’’

It is true that increase in Immigration is essential for addressing the rising problem of the province’s declining working-age population, which could impact Newfoundland by a calculated loss of 35,000 workers by the year of 2025. This multi-year plan has been called to rescue the province in fact the whole country out of this situation. The plan also fits with pains that the province is taking to grow the province’s tech sector and other industries for diversification of the provincial economy. The province currently relies hugely on the exploitation of offshore oil and gas reserves.

The PNP offered by the province known as Newfoundland and Labrador’s Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP), has three immigration streams for inviting skilled workers and international graduates. Out of these three streams, one is linked to the federal Express Entry system that sends nomination to candidates from the Express Entry pool.

Lately, the province also announced the introduction of two new immigration streams for business persons and entrepreneurs, which will soon get open to interested candidates in the near future.

Newfoundland and Labrador also intakes skilled workforce through a program known as Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP).

AIPP is a joint federal-provincial pilot program that helps designated employers in four Atlantic Provinces of Canada get connected with eligible foreign workers and international graduates in order to decrease the labour gaps and skilled workforce shortages in the provinces. The AIPP has been introduced to welcome more than 7,000 new permanent residents to Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island that all are the Atlantic provinces of Canada, by the end of year 2020.

Newfoundland and Labrador also took the bold step of publishing the list of employers in the province who are designated to invite skilled workers under the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program.
